Cha Seung Won Becomes the Hidden Mountain Man in Breathtaking Movie Posters

These set of teaser movie posters have got to be one of the finest this year, because the gorgeous colours and the eye-catching details incorporated into the posters will surely catch people’s attention. The four posters are the first promo material released for the movie Gosanja: Daedongyeojido (고산자: 대동여지도), translated as Man of the Old Mountain: The Great Map of the East Land, and they are like playing a game of Finding Cha Seung-won in the posters. Once you have recovered from the visual shock, you will realize that he is there in every poster, finding his way throughout the land of 19th century Joseon.

The actor will portray the main figure behind the production of the most comprehensive map of Joseon named Kim Jeong-ho. Gosanja was his pen name, and it was believed that this dedicated geographer went on his two feet traveling around the country to compile his greatest masterpiece, which would come to be known as Daedongyeojido, or The Great Map of the East Land. The movie is based on the trials and tribulations faced by the character in his attempt to record everything into one big map, fighting against the political power of late Joseon and his own fate. The character lost his father due to faulty map, driving him into producing a complete map recording precise and detailed information, from mountain valleys and bridges, to the smallest details like past magistrate office and even settlements.

The movie will include the behind story of Gosanja, including his map which will bring him to the most powerful man in Joseon at that time, Heungseon Daewongun. Daewongun was the regent for his young son Gojong at the time of Daedongyeojido completion, but Gosanja’s whereabouts after the publication of a later version of the map in 1866 remained a mystery. It was said that his disappearance had something to do with Daewongun. Well…sometimes being high achievers in Joseon can bring more trouble, so that could be it…but I am willing to wait and see how the movie will bring Kim Jeong-ho and his peninsula-trotting journey to life, as well as his personal motivation and drive behind it. Coming from Director Kang Woo-suk (Moss, Fist of Legend, Tough as Iron), the movie will be the director’s first venture into historical movies, and it will be his 20th movie. It is opening in September, although the date remains unknown for now.
